What Moves Your Fee Up or Down
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) says treatment cost is influenced by the type, complexity, and duration of treatment. Here is how each one plays out at Bloom.
Type of treatment. Lingual braces can reach the top of Bloom's range. Bloom's lingual braces page attributes that to custom fabrication, specialized training, and longer chair time. Metal braces start at the low end, at $3,500.
Case complexity. Bloom's clear aligner cost guide says mild crowding costs less and severe crowding or bite issues cost more. Some cases need extra appliances.
Treatment length. Longer treatment means more aligners or adjustments and more appointments.
What the fee includes. The AAO suggests confirming what a quoted price includes and what it leaves out. For clear aligners, Bloom's cost guide lists the consultation, digital scan, all aligners, check-in visits, retainers, and any refinement aligners as part of the fee.
How Patients Lower What They Pay
Dental insurance. We accept most PPO orthodontic insurance plans and verify your benefits before your first appointment. The AAO notes that insurance typically covers a percentage of the treatment cost or provides a fixed benefit amount, and that plans can set lifetime maximums. Our guide to whether dental insurance covers orthodontics walks through what to ask your plan.
FSA and HSA funds. Orthodontic treatment is an eligible expense under most Flexible Spending Accounts and Health Savings Accounts, and we can provide the documentation you need. IRS Publication 502 lists braces among the dental treatments that count as medical expenses.
Monthly payment plans. We offer low and no-interest payment plans so you can start without a large upfront cost. We go over the options at your consultation. See insurance and financing for details.
Programs for kids with financial need. The AAO lists Gifted Smiles, Smiles Change Lives, and Smile for a Lifetime as programs that provide orthodontic treatment to children under 18 at low or no cost.
Coverage for medically necessary braces. In California, the family dental plans sold through Covered California list medically necessary braces for children, and Medi-Cal Dental covers medically necessary orthodontics for members under 21 who qualify. Bloom does not accept Medi-Cal. If Medi-Cal denies a patient because they do not qualify on the HLD form, Bloom can still treat them in the office with in-house payment plans. Our insurance guide explains how those rules work.
