Lingual braces hide behind the teeth. Ceramic braces blend in on the front. How they compare on looks, comfort, speech, cleaning, and cost at Bloom in Long Beach and Garden Grove.

Lingual braces sit on the back of the teeth, so they cannot be seen from the front, while ceramic braces sit on the front with tooth-colored brackets that blend in. Lingual braces are the more hidden choice. Ceramic braces are usually easier to get used to and, at Bloom, cost a little less at the top of the range.
Both are fixed braces that use brackets and a wire to move teeth, so either can handle a wide range of cases. The differences are in look, comfort, and daily care.
Quick Comparison
| Lingual braces | Ceramic (clear) braces | |
|---|---|---|
| Where they sit | Tongue side of the teeth | Front of the teeth |
| Visibility | Virtually invisible from the front | Less noticeable than metal, visible up close |
| Getting used to them | Tongue soreness and speech changes are more common | Lips and cheeks adjust to front brackets |
| Cleaning | Harder to see and reach | Similar to regular braces |
| Fee at Bloom | $4,000 to $6,000 | $4,000 to $5,500 |
| Typical time at Bloom | 12 to 24 months | 12 to 24 months |
Looks
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) describes lingual braces as mounted on the back sides of the teeth, making them virtually invisible, and says they effectively correct many orthodontic issues. Ceramic braces use tooth-colored or clear brackets designed to blend with your teeth. People talking with you are unlikely to notice ceramic brackets, but they can be seen up close and in photos.
Comfort and Speech
A systematic review and meta-analysis comparing lingual and front-mounted (buccal) braces found that lingual patients reported more tongue pain, more speech difficulty, and more trouble keeping teeth clean. Front braces caused more cheek and lip soreness. Eating difficulty and cavity risk did not differ between the two.
Most speech changes from lingual braces fade as the tongue adapts. Our guide to lingual braces and speech explains what to expect week by week.
Cleaning
Lingual brackets are harder to see in the mirror. A water flosser and an interproximal brush help. Ceramic brackets are easy to see and clean around, though the clear elastic ties can pick up stains between visits and are replaced at adjustments.
Cost
At Bloom, lingual braces are $4,000 to $6,000 and ceramic braces are $4,000 to $5,500. Lingual brackets are custom made for the back of each tooth and placement takes longer, which is why the top of the lingual range is higher. Your exact fee is set after an exam.
Which Fits You?
Choose lingual braces if no one seeing your braces matters most, for example on camera or in client-facing work.
Choose ceramic braces if you want a discreet look with an easier adjustment and simpler cleaning.
