Clear aligners can work well for many teens who will wear them 20 to 22 hours a day. Who is a good fit, what parents should watch for, and how Bloom decides in Long Beach and Garden Grove.

Clear aligners can work as well as braces for many teens with mild to moderate crowding, spacing, or bite problems, as long as the trays are worn as prescribed. The deciding factor is usually daily wear: the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) says aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day, and that inconsistent wear can extend treatment or compromise results.
For teens with complex bite problems, fixed braces are often the more predictable choice. Here is how we help families decide at Bloom.
Why Many Teens Ask for Aligners
The AAO notes that the near invisibility of aligners is particularly valued by teens and adults who feel self-conscious about braces. Because aligners come out for meals, there are no food rules about brackets and wires, and brushing and flossing work the way they always have.
When Aligners Are a Good Fit for a Teen
- The case is mild to moderate. The AAO says aligners may not work as predictably for severe bite problems, large rotations, or big gaps.
- Your teen is ready for the routine. Trays come out to eat and to drink anything besides water, then go back in after brushing.
- There is a plan for school, sports, and travel. A case in the backpack and a travel toothbrush prevent most lost trays.
When Braces May Be Better
Some teens do better with fixed braces. The AAO describes braces as able to treat a wide range of bite problems and notes they tend to work faster than other treatments for many cases. Fixed braces also take daily wear out of the equation. Clear ceramic braces are a less visible fixed option for teens who want to blend in.
What Parents Should Watch
Wear time. The trays only move teeth while they are in. Ask your teen to keep them in the case whenever they come out, since the AAO warns against wrapping them in napkins or leaving them in pockets.
Drinks. The AAO advises water only while aligners are in, because sugary or acidic drinks trapped against the teeth can stain them and cause cavities.
Lost or broken trays. The AAO says to contact your orthodontist right away if an aligner is lost or damaged. Call us and we will tell you whether to move to the next tray or go back to the last one.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are clear aligners as good as braces for teens?
For many mild to moderate cases, yes, when the trays are worn 20 to 22 hours a day. Complex bite problems often respond more predictably to fixed braces.
What age can a teen start clear aligners?
It depends on which teeth have come in and the bite problem. Your orthodontist checks this at the first visit.
What happens if my teen does not wear the aligners enough?
The AAO says inconsistent wear can lengthen treatment or compromise the result. Your orthodontist may suggest a different plan if wear stays low.
Can my teen play sports with aligners?
Yes. Talk with your orthodontist about a mouthguard for contact sports.
