Clear aligners work for many adults over 40. What changes with age, why gum health comes first, and how Bloom's board-certified orthodontists plan adult aligner cases in Long Beach and Garden Grove.

Clear Aligners for Adults Over 40: What to Know Before You Start

Yes, clear aligners can work well for adults over 40, as long as your gums and the bone around your teeth are healthy. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) says age is rarely a deciding factor, and that the process that moves teeth through bone is the same whether you are 8 or 80.

You would have plenty of company. The AAO reports that about 1 in 3 orthodontic patients today is an adult. Here is what is different after 40 and how we plan for it at Bloom.

Why Adults Start Treatment Later in Life

The AAO notes that teeth can naturally shift as we age. Many adults in their 40s and 50s come in because front teeth that were once straight have started to crowd, or because a bite problem is causing uneven wear. The AAO lists crowding, overbite, underbite, open bite, tooth wear, and gum disease risk among the reasons adults seek care, and says misaligned teeth are harder to clean.

What Changes After 40

Gum health comes first. The AAO's answers for adults considering treatment warn that straightening teeth when gum health is poor can lead to recession, root shortening, or tooth loss. They also note that X-rays are the only way to see beneath the gums, and that gum health is best checked in person. That is why an in-person exam matters more for adults than any app or mail-order kit.

Treatment can take a little longer. The AAO says adult treatment may take slightly longer than a child's with a similar problem, because adult bone is more mature and dense. It adds that this does not affect the success of treatment.

Dental work needs a plan. Crowns, bridges, and past fillings change how aligners fit. The AAO advises finishing any dental work before your aligner scan, since the trays are made to the exact shape of your teeth.

Some cases suit braces better. The AAO notes that aligners may be less predictable for severe bite problems, large rotations, or big gaps. Lingual or clear braces are options when that applies.

Making Aligners Fit a Busy Adult Life

The AAO says aligners should be worn 20 to 22 hours a day and taken out to eat or drink anything besides water. Adults who do well with aligners usually build the routine around meals: trays out, eat, brush, trays back in. Keeping a case and a travel toothbrush at work helps.

Adult Aligners at Bloom

Most of our patients are adults, and Dr. Thao Nguyen Vu and Dr. Judy Nguyen are board-certified orthodontists who plan every adult case themselves at our Long Beach and Garden Grove offices. Your free consultation includes X-rays, records, and a treatment simulation, so we can check gum and bone health and show you the planned result before you decide.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old for clear aligners at 45 or 50?

Usually no. The AAO says you are never too old for orthodontic treatment and that age is rarely a deciding factor. Healthy gums and bone matter more than age.

Do aligners take longer for older adults?

They can take slightly longer. The AAO says adult treatment may take a bit longer than a child's because adult bone is denser, without affecting the result.

Can I get aligners if I have crowns or fillings?

Often, yes. Your orthodontist plans around existing dental work, and any new dental work should be finished before your aligner scan.

What if I have gum disease?

Gum health needs to be stable before teeth are moved. The AAO warns that moving teeth with poor gum health can cause recession or tooth loss, so your orthodontist checks this first.
