Refinements are extra aligner trays that fine-tune your result. Why they happen, how they work, and what Bloom's clear aligner fee includes in Long Beach and Garden Grove.

A refinement is an extra set of clear aligner trays made near the end of treatment to fine-tune teeth that have not fully reached their planned positions. At Bloom, the full clear aligner fee includes a reasonable number of refinements plus retainers, so the refinements most cases need are covered by the fee.
Refinements are a normal part of aligner treatment. Here is why they happen and what to expect.
Why Refinements Happen
Aligners move teeth a small amount with each tray. The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) notes that aligners may not work as predictably for some movements, such as significant rotations, and that results depend heavily on wear. Common reasons for a refinement include:
- A tooth lagging behind the plan, often a rotated or tipped tooth
- Small gaps or bite contacts that need a final adjustment
- Missed wear time, since the AAO says inconsistent wear can extend treatment or compromise results
How a Refinement Works
- Check. Your orthodontist compares your teeth with the plan at a check-in.
- New scan. We take a fresh digital scan of where your teeth are now.
- New plan. The remaining movements are mapped in the aligner software.
- New trays. A shorter series of aligners is made and worn the same way, 20 to 22 hours a day.
The AAO notes delivery from the manufacturer can take 4 to 6 weeks, so plan for a short wait between the scan and your new trays.
Refinement or Second Treatment?
A refinement finishes the original plan. A second treatment usually means starting again after teeth have shifted, often years later, when retainers were not worn. If your teeth moved after an earlier round of aligners or braces, our guide Am I too old for braces? and our adult orthodontics page are a good start.
What Bloom's Fee Includes
Clear aligners at Bloom cost $3,500 to $6,000. The full fee includes a reasonable number of refinements plus retainers. Your treatment plan lists what is covered before you begin, so there are no surprises if you need extra trays.
How to Need Fewer Refinements
- Wear your trays 20 to 22 hours a day.
- Switch trays on the schedule your orthodontist gives you.
- Keep trays in their case when they are out.
- Call if a tray stops fitting, cracks, or goes missing.
